Cambridge-based Internet domain broker Sedo.com LLC reports it will be offering through a private brokerage the domain Sex.com, which is being sold by its owner Escom LLC of Los Angeles. The sex.com domain is considered to be the most valuable domain name in the world, and Escom bought it in 2006 for a reported $14 million.
Sedo, which stands for “Search Engine for Domain Offers,” has a database of domain names for sale that includes more than 16 million listings. In September 2009, Sedo sold the remaining stake of its ownership to its parent, German online marketing services firm AdLINK, for $8 million in cash and stock.
Escom had been facing a forced sale of the domain due to bankruptcy, but in March, creditors filed to stop the auction because they didn’t believe that they would get the full value of the domain in a forced sale, according to a report on Wired.com.[Rodney H. Brown.MassHighTech]
